In an effort to combat excessive costs associated with Scientific journals, UC System cancels subscription with Elsevier.
The news of the cancellation of this contract comes as a surprise to many as the University of California various locations account for about 10% of the published research that comes out of the United States. The UC Office of the President announced that Elsevier refused to allow the research coming out of the UC system to be made open access in their journals. Elsevier even demanded higher fees on top of the estimated $11 million that come in the subscription package.
